"Is Central Asia safe?" – This is probably the most common question we get asked by our clients. We can understand why – this is one of the least-discussed and little-understood regions in the world, it’s smart to be cautious!
So let us answer directly: Yes, Central Asia is generally regarded as a safe place for travelers. The biggest – but still very rare – risk you’ll ever face is an opportunistic pickpocket in a busy street.
Of course you still need to take all the usual precautions when visiting any new country: wear a money belt, keep an eye on your belongings, avoid dark streets at night and take only official taxis if you’re travelling independently. Safety while trekking
At Kalpak Travel, we follow well established trekking routes and high-quality equipment to ensure your comfort and security. Each group is accompanied by professional and qualified mountain leaders trained in safety and first aid. Additionally, we carry a satellite phone for emergencies, so help is always within reach, even in the most remote areas. At the border
All borders in Central Asia are safe for travelers. Most of our trips are multi-country and will involve some border crossings. Border points tend to be quite busy and luggage has to be carried across the border – it cannot be left on the vehicle. Border crossings are safe, and the border guards are particularly friendly to foreign tourists who are eager to present their countries in a good light. Sometimes there is a security check and your luggage gets scanned – similar to the airport.
On our tours, your guide crosses the border with you, they are experienced in navigating these areas and will ensure that everything runs smoothly. Government travel advisories
To provide some perspective, take a look at the U.S. government’s travel advisory map. All five Central Asian countries—Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan—are rated at the lowest risk levels, 1 and 2. In fact, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan are deemed safer than many European countries like France, Germany, and the UK. Tajikistan and Turkmenistan are as safe as most Western European countries. Traveling with Kalpak Travel
